Location
Shenandoah County is strategically located in the northwestern portion of Virginia, between the Allegheny and Massanutten Mountains, in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. Washington, D.C., Baltimore (MD), Richmond, Roanoke, and Harrisburg (PA) are all located within 150 miles of Woodstock, Shenandoah County’s seat.
Virginia’s Northern Shenandoah Valley is the mid-Atlantic crossroads for Interstates 81 and 66. Interstate 66 provides easy access to points east including Washington, D.C. and Baltimore. Interstate 81 travels north-south the entire length of the County, with nine interchanges including one at I-66 north of Strasburg. Interstate 64 lies just south of the County. U.S. Route 11 also travels north-south and U.S. 211 crosses the County’s southern tip. State primary routes 42, 263, and 55 also serve as connector roads. As a transportation hub it gives overnight access to 60% of U.S. industrial activity; is within 500 miles of 50% of the population; and offers direct access to Canadian markets via I-81.

Eleven trucking companies have routes through the County with terminals at Winchester and Harrisonburg. Appalachian Freight Carriers has a terminal in Edinburg. Greyhound Bus Line also provides both passenger and light freight service. United Parcel Service, Emery Worldwide, Federal Express, and Purolator provide parcel service.
Norfolk Southern Corporation and CSX Corporation provide rail service in Shenandoah County. The nearest port facilities are located in Hampton Roads (230 miles) and Baltimore (130 miles). The Virginia Inland Port is located in Warren County on Route 522/340 1.5 miles north of the I-66 interchange and just 25 miles from Woodstock via I-81 and I-66. This intermodal terminal is a hub for truck container traffic to and from Northern Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Containerized freight travels via rail cars to and from the Port of Hampton Roads. Daily the facility performs ramping and deramping for railroad vans, private vans, and containers to Norfolk Southern trains giving local companies intermodal rail transportation anywhere in the United States.
Dulles International Airport is located within 75 miles and Washington’s Reagan National is only 90 miles away. Municipal airports are located in the County at Bayse (2,400 foot paved runway, lighted field, fuel available), New Market (3,047 foot paved runway, lighted field, fuel and charters available, and at the Winchester Regional Airport (4,500 foot runway, lighted field, fuel and instrument rating available) to the north.
